NEW LOOK CAO!

We have a new label!  It’s taken a while and there have been a multitude of ideas and versions along the way but we’re here and we love it. So, the old label was only ever meant to be temporary (ish) to get the business off the ground.  A year on and we (my lovely husband the designer and general super hero) and I have a much clearer idea of the product and brand. The first thing to tell you about is the change in description.  We are now calling ourselves a spread rather than a hot chocolate.  This doesn’t mean anything inside the jar has changed-not one ingredient or gram.  ‘Hot chocolate’ just pigeoned holed us too much and...

A YEAR ON....

since I launched Cao.  I had very little idea of how things would pan out and certainly no strategy.  Twelve months later, we’re still here and thriving and I could not be happier or more grateful. Whilst I grew up helping to run our family business and my husband has his own company, I have still found so much to learn, not least because food production and retail was a brand-new area to me.  It’s been hard!  Like all small business owners, I feel pulled in a million different directions and as many working parents will know, it’s tough to manage it all and still feel that you’re giving your children enough time and not feel permanently guilty.  I’m not...

Love Chocolate

So, we know that it has something to do with good old St Valentine but why and what has chocolate got to do with it?  So apparently, Valentine performed secret marriages back in the fourth century when Emperor Claudius II (the miserable bastard) had outlawed them.  Valentine was caught and executed on the 14th February….. But how did our favourite treat get involved and why is chocolate so associated with love? Chocolate contains a number of psychoactive chemicals, including a neurotransmitter called anandamide.  The word comes from Sanskrit and means "joy, bliss or delight". Anandamides stimulate the brain in a similar way to cannabis. And while no proof exists that chocolate is an aphrodisiac, it does containphenylethylamine, a mild mood booster that our brain...

Plastic Not So Fantastic

There is no denying the enormous challenge that we are facing with regard to the vast amount of plastic we are consuming as a planet.  I have been truly inspired by stories I have heard recently of people trying to go plastic free.  This is something I have been talking about with my children and we have been thinking about how we might be able to reduce our consumption.  From a business point of view, I am happy to say that our plastic footprint is pretty low already, the only thing that arrives in plastic is our maple syrup and we recycle these (usually after they’ve been transformed into spaceships, forts, cities or any other junk modelling creation!)  The biggest plastic challenge I face...

Kindness Day x

I know there is a ‘day’ for everything nowadays and some are beyond ridiculous but today is National Kindness Day and I think that’s worth celebrating.  Of course, we could say that there should be no need for this and that everyday should be filled with this virtue, but we know that we all let the important stuff slip in the whirlwind we live in.  We can show kindness in so many ways and the smallest gesture can mean so much to someone.  It is so easy to carry on, head down in pursuit of whatever we are pursuing but the benefit for everyone (including ourselves) of stopping and being kind is huge and infectious. Kindness UK, the lovely people...
