Cao our range of handmade, natural, raw cacao spreads. The pastes are a true indulgence and can be appreciated in so many ways; as a spread, in hot or cold drinks, stirred into porridge or even used baking. They are all free from dairy, gluten and refined sugar and are suitable for Vegans.
The herd comprises three lovely girls; Classic, the traditional comforter; Mint, an enlivener; Orange, a zesty treat.
Raw cacao is somewhat different from the "Cocoa" most of us know. Cacao (pronounced "cu-COW"-hence our name) refers to the Theobroma Cacao ('food of the gods') tree from which Cocoa is derived, and refers to the unprocessed version of the cacao bean. Normal cocoa powder and chocolate have been chemically processed and roasted, destroying a large amount of the antioxidants and flavanols (the things that keep you young and healthy). This 'Dutch processing' was developed in the early 19th Century to reduce the bitterness, darken the colour, and create a more mellow flavour to chocolate, but unfortunately also eliminated a bunch of the goodness. Raw Cacao, sometimes called ‘The Amazonion Superfood’, is said to have 40 times the antioxidant benefit of blueberries. It is also a great source of iron, magnesium, potassium and selenium. This delectable natural boost is said to have beneficial effects for the heart, brain, muscle growth, digestion, anti ageing, stress reduction and to be a natural mood elevator (it certainly puts a smile on our faces!) use organic raw cacao from Ecuador. It comes from small producers on the coast and is part of a scheme to help farmers preserve their environment and communities to improve their standards of living
We use premium A grade Canadian maple syrup in our pastes to provide a natural sweetness. Maple syrup contains some important antioxidants and minerals like zinc and manganese and it has a lower glycaemic index than cane sugar. It also tastes sublime!
The spreads can be enjoyed at any time of day, they mix well with both dairy and plant based milks to make delicious drinks. It is heavenly stirred into porridge, poured over pancakes, blended into a smoothie, amazing melted over ice cream or stirred into a cheeky Espresso Martini! See our recipe page for ideas.
